Good morning everyone!

I'm so sorry that I failed to pop in here and let you know that I'm taking two weeks off from Pinned it, Made it! Monday, that being yesterday (November 25th) and next Monday as well (December 1st). I will be back at it on Monday, December 8th.

I really appreciate my blogging friends! Thanks for hanging with me and not giving up on me during my time away from regular blogging. I have much to share and hope to get back at it after our vacation this week. We're in Alabama for the week of Thanksgiving.

Marking my second anniversary of life in Rome




The other day I was riding an escalator and became so engrossed in conversation with my friend Stefania, who was one step below me, that I forgot where I was and when the moving stairs reached the top, I pitched backwards, arms windmilling frantically before I fell flat on my back. My biggest concern was that my pant leg would get caught in the machinery and rip the fabric right off my backside - THAT would be mortifying.

So, I jumped right up and then I had to laugh at how clumsy I am.

Today as I mark the two-year anniversary of the day I moved from Canada to Rome, I really think that this has been the most important thing that I have learned, and re-learned, and re-learned again: how crucial it is to maintain a good sense of humour; and how crucial it is to be able to laugh at myself.



Life in Rome is full of complications and challenges - like life anywhere, I suppose. But living in a new culture and a new language adds a few extra layers in complexity and I devote a fair amount of effort to learning to navigate these. Happily, I have mostly done better in life than I did on that escalator.

I continue struggling to find a place to settle and perhaps it was fitting that today, on my anniversary, I marked the occasion by finding a new apartment - my 5th since arriving here! I am excited to be returning to the Monti area where my first two apartments were located and which is my favourite quartiere in Rome.

The apartment itself is extraordinarily small (above is the view if I lean way out the window) but since one of my goals in moving to Italy was to find a more simple, pared down life while enlarging my emotional and intellectual self, I suppose it fits. Plus, it has a full-sized fridge, no mean thing.

I have made some wonderful new friends in Rome, including Michele who owns a fantastic art gallery, RvB Affordable Art near Piazza Farnese. I popped in to snag her for a quick lunch at Zoc's which is charming. I had ravioli stuffed with pumpkin.



Then, time to run errands which I seem to do a lot in Rome. However, it is certainly more beautiful to do so here, when I can take shortcuts such as today's through the courtyard of the Museo di Roma in Palazzo Braschiwhere there was an interesting outdoor display of sculpture:






I emerged in Piazza Navona where booths are being set up for the Christmas mercato. This will be my third Christmas in Rome and unfortunately, I have seen that the market has become dominated by cheap imported trinkets that push out more authentic Italian goods and spoil the effect. Alas.





Still, no matter how tawdry some elements of life here can be, these cannot undermine the great and sometimes surprising magnificence of Rome!

Disappearing Nine-Patch Lap Quilt, purchased as a kit earlier in the year from Patchworks Plus, Tasmania.


I found it to be a great learning project in trying to get my seams joins super-accurate.

Many of you will be familiar with the fabrics; it's Vintage Modern... charm squares some extra. I had long admired this range, but never had an idea of what I would make.

This one is a few firsts for me... first kit quilt... first time of getting something professionally quilted... first time of using a whole range of fabrics instead of just a few... first time sewing a project using mostly pre-cut fabric...
I wanted to challenge myself to a few things, I learned a lot.

Being that this is actually the 3rd quilt I've made (the others are here here) perhaps I can call myself a 'maker of simple quilts'... yes? Maybe 'non quilt maker' is not quite accurate any more?

Especially because I am already planning my next one!!

I know Thanksgiving is right around the corner but I love turkey and it seems there is never enough left overs after the big day so it has become a Warchol household tradition to have our own early Thanksgiving the weekend before. So today I will cook a 20lb lovely bird, and we will be eating turkey for the next week, which I personally, am 100% ok with. Sadly our usually festivities took a turn for the worse this week, we usually have my mother-in-law here with us and we spend the weekend eating and watching cheesy Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel. On Friday she had a medical emergency which has left her in critical but stable condition, thankfully lots of prayer,some quick thinking and her strong will...she should make a full recovery. Our dinner won't exactly be the same, and actually may only include Olena and I at some point, since Jason will be up at the hospital, but I have had this turkey in my fridge for a week and it has to be cooked.

Olena has also been feeling a little under the weather. The transition into winter is always a hard one for her. With her SPD, the winter becomes a challenge. She has made huge improvements over the last 7 years with her ability to "control" herself and find things to do that meet her sensory craving but of course being cold outside we are limited to what she can do. So usually from Nov-Jan we deal with a fidgety, restless, lack of sleep and cranky girl, but we are doing what we can to get through it and thankfully as her parents we too have come a long way in recognizing and cooping with the season changes of Olena! :) LOL

This week her lack of sleep and eating has held to a slight rundown cold. Her nose has been stuffy and she has been very sluggish. I made a few changes to her bed last night, adding a pad to the mattress and another thin but heavy blanket, this worked like a charm because she didn't even flutter her pretty eyes until 7:30 this morning and that was only because I accidentally woke her up. She is a very early bird, usually gets up at 5:30-6 but that is regardless of what time she goes to bed the night before. But the memory foam and the weight of the blanket hugged her body enough that thankfully her body and mind relaxed and she got a good solid 11 hours of sleep. She is now just anxiously awaiting turkey preparation because she likes to see all of the extra body parts that are inside! she is so gross.

When Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005, the storm brought sustained winds of 125 miles per hour. That was enough to rate a Category 3. Typhoon Haiyan (or Yolanda) made landfall in some of the southern islands of the Philippines with a lethal punch of 195 miles per hour sustained winds. That Category 5 typhoon earned the label of "super typhoon" and also became the most destructive typhoon/hurricane on record.

The toll on human life and property is unimaginable. Unless you are there, or have experienced a hurricane before, the early casualty numbers are probably just a set of statistics. But that should not be a barrier to action. First, we must draw on a sense of solidarity. Pray, and not just for good wishes for the victims and their families. Prayer means solidarity. So before you pray (and after you pray), take time to read about the situation. By doing so, God will give you a space to discern what actions you can take to respond to the situation.
